The Power of Pleasure
I was a professional chef for many years, first in restaurants and then in my own catering and specialty foods manufacturing company. I got into the business because I loved to cook and I got out of the business because I love to cook. After a time cooking as a business wasn't fun anymore. But cooking for myself and my friends still is.
I often come home from doing something tiring and perhaps stressful and surprise myself with all the energy I suddenly have when I go to start dinner. The pleasure of cooking energizes me. I know musicians and artists who have similar experiences. We have so much more available energy when we're doing what we love. Why is that?
Because pleasure is powerful!
When we talk about something being powerful, we're referring to its ability to help get things done, to be effective in some way. Pleasure does just that; it helps us get things done that we desire. Desire is always about getting something, doing something, or being something that has some promise of bringing about feeling better. A desire for less pain is on the same continuum as a desire for sexual ecstasy, just at a different point. Essentially, we use pleasure to help us get more pleasure.
However, it's not always obvious why pleasure is powerful. So here are six ways that it is.
#1. Our energy is highest when we are enjoying ourselves. With more energy we can accomplish more. We put our hearts into it. Since we are always motivated to do things that will help us feel better, the better the feeling, the greater the motivation (to the degree that we don't resist ourselves.)
People rarely succeed unless they have fun in what they are doing.
#2. Pleasure is a sign that most or all of us is in alignment with what we are doing and thus we are not losing energy by fighting ourselves. When we are enjoying ourselves, we are in the present moment. We can only enjoy something in the present where we can let go of doubt and fear. So often we let concerns about what other people are thinking, or how we should be doing something that we allow some of the pleasure to slip away.
Everything is perfect in the moment of its enjoyment.
#3. We are most effective when we are resonating fully with what we want to accomplish. When we praise, bless, or appreciate the thing we are looking for or to do, we come into vibrational alignment with it. If we want to manifest something we do it by enjoying, in the present moment, what it is we want. We give thanks for it, now, in order to be in the vibration of what it is we desire.
Make it a habit to tell people thank you. To express your appreciation, sincerely and without the expectation of anything in return. Truly appreciate those around you, and you'll soon find many others around you. Truly appreciate life, and you'll find that you have more of it.
#4. We influence parts of the world around us when we connect to them. We connect by feeling good and appreciating them or praising them. That's why gods and powerful people are always approached with gifts and compliments--to connect with them in order to influence them favorably. Nagging and criticizing are seldom effective because they exist in the absence of connection. But when we find some way of feeling good with someone or something, then we have opened our hearts and established some kind of relationship in which to operate.
Give yourself abundant pleasure, and you will have abundant pleasure to give to others.
#5. When we are experiencing pleasure we are connected to our deepest core, our Higher Mind or Aumakua. Whatever we call the non-physical parts of ourselves, it is from these places that we have access to inspiration and insight in abundance. Thus pleasure stimulates creativity. The sexy little muses were inspirational because they stimulated pleasure. Try feeling inward for inspiration when you are stressed. You don't get much. But when you relax and can enjoy the moment, all your questions can be answered and ideas flow naturally.
The essence of all art is to have pleasure in giving pleasure.
#6. Since feeling good is the best definition we have of health, it is what we want for those in need of healing. We can be most effective when we offer the highest vibration we can hold ourselves for others to resonate with for their own healing. We allow them to tune into our stronger and more powerful vibration of pleasure. In addition, when we hold the vibration of good health and happiness with others in mind, we also reap the benefits for ourselves.
All animals, except man, know that the principal business of life is to enjoy it.
